Hillsborough County was first mapped and explored by the Spanish in the early 16th century, and later became part of the United States. The county was officially established in 1834, and grew to include what is now Pinellas, Polk, Manatee, Sarasota, Charlotte, DeSoto, Hardee and Highlands Counties. In 1846 construction began on a new courthouse after the original log cabin was burned during the Second Seminole War. A red brick courthouse with a silver dome replaced it in 1892. Pinellas is derived from the Spanish words Punta Pinal meaning point of pines. It was an accurate description for this area when it was discovered by Panfilo de Narvaez in 1528. The Pinellas County Parks & Conservation Resources Department maintains more than 20,000 acres of pristine Florida landscapes, including parks and preserves. St. Petersburg is a city on Florida’s gulf coast, part of the Tampa Bay area.
